BLACK MEN’S DOSSIER — FATHERHOOD STORY 30: BEM JOINER

Parenting from a distance.

Bem Joiner is the father to a preteen daughter. Joiner’s daughter relocated to Houston with her mom at the age of 2 years old. Naturally the distance has an effect on Joiner being an involved father but he stays connected to his daughter through phone calls.

At times it could be discouraging because kids are always consumed with whatever they are into at the moment. Following the advice of a church associate Greg Gray, author of “Dad from a Distance”, Joiner continues his effort to parent from a distance knowing eventually a breakthrough will come.

“This year it’s happening, the conversations just out of the blue started being much more interactive. I talked to her regular. I never talk baby; child talk or whatever. I say ‘we just got to figure it out I know it’s on me at the end of the day, we got to do what we got to do because it’s just daddy and Rai’ she says “it’s just Daddy and Rai”.
